The plot of the novel features Gabriel Oak, a young shepherd, and Bathsheba Everdene, a beautiful lady who comes with her aunt to live in Gabriel’s neighborhood. They fall in love with each other and so the story continues. The novel is adopted into multiple films as well as marked number 10 in the Guardian’s list of greatest love stories of all time in 2007.
Thomas Hardy was a Victorian English novelist and also a poet. He was influenced by George Elliot, William Wordsworth and Charles Dickens’ and thus criticized the Victorian era, focusing mainly on decline of rural society.
