The novel tells story of Fanny Price, a girl from an overburdened family, sent at age of 10 to live with her rich aunt’s family. The novel was well received by public at the time of publishing. The story starts by marriages of three sisters. The third sister is married to a marine lieutenant who is retired after sometime and thus is unable to cover the expenses of his 9 children. So his wife, Mrs. Price requests her rich sister Lady Bertram to take care of one of her children. So, Mrs. Bertram decided to take Fanny Price, the eldest child, to take with herself. And so the story of Fanny’s life goes on.

It briefly mentions slave trade of the British and mentions Sir Thomas, the uncle of Fanny Price, having plantations in West Indies. It is bildungsroman featuring the life of Fanny Price.
